Catch Up...

Sunday, June 8th, 2008
This page has been missing in action for a spell. Back with big news.
Firstly, there are three new releases for you to catch up with - the remixed Treeless Plain, the revamped The Black Swan and the brand new compilation Beautiful Waste And Other Songs. TP has been given a beautiful remix by original twiddler Nick Mainsbridge and it's come up a treat. It comes with bonus live tracks and generous liner notes. TBS has had extra tracks added, belatedly fulfilling Dave's instructions of the early nineties. We've also included a bonus disc of demos and expanded liner notes. Beautiful Waste is a collection of mini-masterpieces from the period '83-'85 - Raining Pleasure, Lawson Square Infirmary, Field Of Glass and a couple of miscellaneous tracks as well as the title track.
Other big news - The Triffids will be inducted into the ARIA Hall Of Fame on July 1st, a big honour for us and totally unexpected. We regard it as another brick in the David McComb memorial wall and we're looking forward to it with relish.

Not The Marrying Kind/Spanish Blue...

Monday, June 4th, 2007
New audio files on the audio page - 1982 demo of NTMK and a live version of Spanish Blue from 10/10/83. The Spanish Blue track is slightly marred by someone pressing the record button just a fraction of a second too late and someone neglecting to turn the keyboard up until the song is well under way but it's a great version anyway. Marrying Kind was recorded at the McComb family home in '82, Dave's Mum hitting the record button.

Kelly's Blues...

Tuesday, May 1st, 2007
Just posted a version of Kelly's Blues from the In the Pines sessions on the audio page. It didn't make it onto the original and missed out on the re-issue, but it's a fine song well executed all the same.

Limited edition singles re-issue...

Friday, April 27th, 2007
Did the mastering last week for a special, limited edition box set of the first five singles and EPs. After a couple of abortive attempts to work from vinyl we managed to find decent masters of all five first singles/EPs and they sound great. I mastered them with Simon Polinski who did the ITP master. We had one or two problems with dropouts but we're working with very old tape and that's to be expected. We were able to get good masters of all tracks and they should be in production next week. Plenty of photos from that era have been cropping up (no pun intended).
So we're talking

  • Stand Up/Farmers Never Visit Nightclubs

  • Spanish Blue/Twisted Brain

  • Reverie EP

  • Bad Timing And Other Stories

  • Beautiful Waste/Property Is Condemned

With original art work as far as is possible. Theoretically they'll sound very like the originals, a good bit clearer as we've been able to get masters of high quality.
More details on art work as it comes to hand.
I can say after listening to these songs many, many times in the past few weeks, they're an amazing collection of songs for a band to have released before their first album, especially when you consider all the other stuff that was released as well on cassette, and the fact that none of these songs appears on the debut album.
This is a Domino only release. There won't be an official Aus release of this set.
The songs will be made available for free download for those who buy the box.
Exact release date yet to be decided. Keep your eye on the Domino site for more news on this.

The next batch...

Thursday, April 26th, 2007
We've been getting some great reactions to In The Pines and Calenture. I'm very pleased that we've been able to tie these two together representing, as they do, polar opposites in time taken, money spent, instruments hired and sheep eaten. Yet they share some songs, and each still stands as a valid and exciting collection of David McComb songs done Triffid's style.
Anyway, to move on a little, a bit later in the year we're going to release a batch of records. This batch will include Treeless Plain, The Black Swan, Raining Pleasure and Field Of Glass. Exactly how it's going to be assembled, which tracks will be included as bonus tracks, how the art work will be updated etc - these are things still to be finally decided on. I can tell you, however, that Treeless Plain is going to be remixed (ie mixed again, not subjected to a few drum machines and samples) by Nick Mainsbridge who some of you will recognise as the one responsible for the original production and mix. We've baked and transfered the original 24 track masters and Nick is about to begin the remix. Legend has it that this album was recorded in a few midnight to dawn sessions and mixed in two and a half hours. I wasn't there so I can't vouch for this but I'm looking forward very much to hearing these great songs spruced up. More on the rest of the batch as it comes to hand.

ITP and Calenture are out...

Sunday, February 4th, 2007
In The Pines and Calenture have just been released in their shiny new form in the UK and Europe. Aus/NZ/USA will follow shortly.
In The Pines has been remixed from the original 8 track tapes by Bruce Callaway who was mixer and producer of the original. We also thank Bruce for looking after those masters for two decades - that's above and beyond the call of duty I'd say. We've included 5 tracks that weren't on the original and there's a brand new running order. Deluxe booklet too of course.
Calenture has been remastered revealing extra oomph, sweetness and detail. The package is a double CD - original remastered with 5 B sides from the time comprises disc one, and disc two is a collection of demos of the original tracks plus some tracks never released before. The two paint a picture of an extremely fertile period in the life of David and the band.

BSD tops Rough Trade Chart ...

Friday, December 8th, 2006
The re-issue of Born Sandy Devotional is #1 on Rough Trade's re-issues of 2006, a lofty honour indeed.
Of course, the original was on Rough Trade so it's nice to know there's no hard feelings.
